The James Bay Hydroelectric Project, presently under construction in northern Quebec, is one of the world's largest energy developments. Four major powerhouses are planned that will produce 10,000 MW. There are six reservoirs with 147 earth and rockfill dams containing 203.5 million cu yd of material and extending 60 mi in total length. Water from two other rivers will be diverted into this network on the La Grande River to augment the already enormous potential of this watershed. The electricity will be carried by 735-kV transmission lines. Construction is scheduled over a 12-year period.
