Paramagnetic centers in. gamma. -irradiated single crystals of yttrium aluminum garnet at low temperatures. [Effects of Nd/sup 3 +/, Ce/sup 3 +/, and Cr/sup 3 +/]

A detailed study of the paramagnetic centers in ..gamma..-irradiated yttrium aluminum garnet, Y/sub 3/Al/sub 5/O/sub 12/, (YAG) by electron spin resonance is reported. The nature of the influence of activator ions, Ce/sup 3 +/, Nd/sup 3 +/, and Cr/sup 3 +/, on the stabilization of the radiation centers was also investigated. The studies were carried out at -196/sup 0/C. Depending on the temperature and the nature of the impurities in the YAG crystals, at least three different types of radiation paramagnetic centers were indicated: I stable to -120/sup 0/C, II annealed in a range between -80 and -20/sup 0/C, and III stable up to 300/sup 0/C.
