To add the needed element of toughness to the concrete coating, a number of alternatives were explored, including reverse-wrap wire mesh, introduction of reinforcing bars, and the introduction of various fibrous reinforcements. Laboratory tests confirmed the superiority of steel fibers for the toughening process. The needle-like fibers can be introduced into the concrete mixture prior to application, assuring a uniform fiber distribution. (LK)
