Measurement of the polarization parameter P in elastic. pi. /sup + -/p scattering at 450 MeV

As part of a program of investigation of the ..pi..N interaction in the synchrocylotron at our institute we have measured the polarization parameter P in elastic ..pi../sup + -/p scattering at an incident-pion energy of 450 MeV. The measurements were made by the method of recoil-proton secondary scattering. We describe briefly the experimental apparatus, which consists of 24 wire spark chambers with magnetostrictive readout and a time analysis system. A phase-shift analysis is carried out at 450 MeV with the data obtained. The results are discussed also from the point of view of isospin invariance. (AIP)
