A recent article (J. Comput. Phys., 15, 504 (1974)) investigates the numerical stability of one-dimensional electromagnetic PIC-CIC plasma simulation algorithms. An advective differencing scheme incorrectly attributed to Langdon was discussed. The present note clarifies part of that discussion, analyzes the actual Langdon--Dawson one-dimensional algorithm, and suggests a corresponding multidimensional differencing scheme. The basic approach of advective differencing is to integrate numerically Maxwell's equations along their vacuum characteristics. 1 figure. (RWR)
