General characteristics of crude oil from the Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, field show it is an intermediate-gravity, high-sulfur, high-nitrogen oil that contains a high percentage of aromatics. It is brownish black with a high carbon-residue and asphalt content. The 700 to 1,000/sup 0/F fraction was characterized using a scheme developed as a part of API RP 60. This heavy distillate was separated into a series of compound-type concentrates which indicated about one-half saturates, 6 percent acids, bases, and neutral nitrogen compounds; and the remainder about equally between monoaromatics, diaromatics, and polyaromatic-polar compounds. Spectral analyses of the polyaromatic-polar concentrate show condensed aromatic and thiophenic ring systems containing three to six rings and one-to-seven-ring cyclic sulfides.
