New methods for developing supplemental supplies of gaseous fuel and new measures to improve efficiency in gas energy utilization were the major R and D objectives for the American Gas Association (A.G.A.) in 1976. More than $8 million of A.G.A. funds were invested in the Utility Research Program alone, encompassing such areas as environmental protection; climate control and appliances; supply, storage, and distribution; commercial and industrial uses; on-site power and direct conversion; and a strong program of basic research. Contractors, government agencies, and other organizations participating in the program contributed an estimated $6 million in cooperative funds, for a total program value of $14 million. Progress made in the ERDA/A.G.A. coal gasification pilot program begun in 1971 is reviewed. Administrative data are summarized. (MCW)
