Magnetic properties of R(Fe/sub 1-x/Mn/sub x/)/sub 2/ compounds (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, or Er)
- Univ. of Pittsburgh
RFe/sub 2/ compounds crystallize in the cubic MgCu/sub 2/ type structure whereas RMn/sub 2/ compounds crystallize in the cubic structure when R = Gd, Tb, Dy and hexagonal MgZn/sub 2/ type of structure when R = Ho or Er. Solid solution between RFe/sub 2/ and RMn/sub 2/ was studied using x-ray, magnetic and Moessbauer investigations. When R = Tb and Dy complete homogeneity exists between the end members whereas when R = Gd, Ho, or Er only a limited solubility is found. Saturation magnetization at 4.2/sup 0/K reveals that the moment increases when x is increased whereas the Curie temperature decreases. Magnetization versus temperature on the substituted ternaries revealed the presence of a broad maximum at low temperatures with a very small moment at the lowest temperature measured. This maximum is not present when the specimen is cooled in a field.
