/sup 161/Dy hyperfine parameters for C/sub 2/ and C/sub 3//sub i/ site symmetries in Dy/sub 2/O/sub 3/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., B; (United States)
Low-temperature Moessbauer spectra of /sup 161/Dy in Dy/sub 2/O/sub 3/ reveal for the first time a resolved magnetic hyperfine structure (hfs) associated with Dy/sup 3 +/ at sites with C/sub 3//sub i/(S/sub 6/) point symmetry. The magnetic hfs parameter is near that expected for a pure vertical-bar J/sub xi/ = +- 15/2 > Kramers doublet and is about 10% higher than for Dy/sup 3 +/ ions at sites with C/sub 2/ point symmetry in Dy/sub 2/O/sub 3/. A crystal-field parameter B/sub 2//sup 0/ is deduced from the lattice part of the C/sub 3//sub i/ quadrupole splitting. Both the sign of this parameter and the almost pure vertical-bar J/sub xi/ = +- 15/2 > character of the ground state are shown to be inconsistent with earlier Moessbauer results and crystal-field calculations.
