Three methods of estimating the neutron absorption cross section, sigma/sub a/, of graphite to be used for moderator or reflector components of nuclear reactors and subcritical test reactors and for thermal columns are described. The methods described are for boron and ash, common impurities, and Delta-in-Hours (DIH) purity. The DIH purity test is the most reliable. Poison factors are given for Al, B, Ca, Fe, Si, Ti, V, and ash. (BLM)
