Remote assessment of gases by spectroscopic means is presented. The 'windows' of the atmosphere are described. Electromagnetic signatures of gaseous molecules from 1 Mc to 4000 A are computed and the methods to compute are explained. Passive and active methods which have been successful are described. Lasers and solid state detectors which might be useful are surveyed. (GRA)
