Solution growth of mercuric iodide crystals from dimethylsulfoxide-based solvent systems

Dimethylsulfoxide is found to be an effective solvent for solution growth of large mercuric iodide crystals. Solvent properties, crystal growth and characterization, and nuclear detector properties are discussed. When tested as nuclear radiation detectors, solution-grown crystals did not function as well as vapor-grown crystals.
