Cross sections sigma/sub n/ for production of photoneutrons have been measured in the nuclei /sup 159/Tb, /sup 165/Ho, /sup 166/Er, and /sup 178/Hf. Photoabsorption cross sections sigma/sub ..gamma../ for the nuclei /sup 165/Ho, /sup 166/Er, and /sup 178/Hf were obtained from sigma/sub n/ by separation of the contributions of the (..gamma..,n) and (..gamma..,2n) reactions by a statistical method. In the cross sections sigma/sub ..gamma../ in the even-even nuclei /sup 166/Er and /sup 178/Hf an intermediate structure was observed which correlates with the predictions of the dynamic collective model. The resonances, which are interpreted as vibrational satellites, have substantially smaller widths than the main dipole peaks. (AIP)
