Investigations of the felt effects of the December 14, 1872, earthquake in northern Oregon and southern Washington were conducted to determine the completeness and accuracy of previous studies of this earthquake. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the population distribution and extent of communications in 1872, together with the weather conditions prior to and during the earthquake. The data collected during the investigations, based on published reports and private communication, indicate that intensities felt in northern Oregon and southern Washington are likely lower by /sup 1///sub 2/ to 1 mm intensity than those previously determined for this area; population and communications were sufficient to accurately determine felt effects south and west of the previously proposed epicenter; effects in the proposed mesoseismal area and to the east and north are not well constrained by presently available historical data; and there is no evidence that indicates exceptionally wet weather was a contributory factor to the reportedly widespread occurrence of landslides during the 1872 earthquake.
