Title: Statement of Henry R. Linden, President, Institute of Gas Technology, in an appearance before the Subcommittee on Energy Research and Water Resources, Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, United States Senate, March 3, 1975. [Development of synthetic fuels]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7327567

The role of synthetic fuels continues to be in question because of such recent documents such as Project Independence report that synthetic fuels are assigned only a negligible percentage of total energy supply in 1985. The speaker then made clear the fact that the natural gas supply needs to be expanded. ERDA must enhance the supply of additional sources of clean hydrocarbon fuels, both gaseous and liquid, but emphasizes high-Btu pipeline gas. The response that the natural gas industry has made toward this issue is reviewed. Other areas the author points to in creating a good climate for synthetic fuels development is that energy conservation will help curtail energy demand. But techniques need to be developed that will allow maintenance of productivity and economic growth while using less units of energy per GNP. The author's remarks concentrated on synthetic fuels from coal, but fuels from oil shales are also of importance. (MCW)
