Enhancement of brightness and radiation energy yield of solid-state lasers. [Yb/sup 3 +/- and Er/sup 3 +/-glass lasers]

The possibility of increasing the radiation brightness was realized by converting the radiation of an Nd/sup 3 +/--glass laser (1.06 ..mu..) into the radiation of a laser with a glass activated by the ions Yb/sup 3 +/ and Er/sup 3 +/. An important result is the significant increase of the per-unit energy delivered by the erbium laser in comparison with the neodymium laser, amounting to 11 J/cm/sup 3/, as against only 0.86 J/cm/sup 3/ in the pumping laser.
