Wave theory in Chew-Goldberger-Low relativistic magnetohydrodynamics

A relativsitically invariant form of the Chew-Goldberger-Low MHD equations with longitudinal and transverse pressures (i.e., along and across the magnetic field in the proper frame of reference) is analyzed. The basic equations, nonlinear Riemann waves, and the relations at strong discontinuities are analyzed. The conditions for an evolutionary nature are discussed. Shocks which ''switch on'' and ''switch off'' a transverse magnetic field are discussed. It is shown that there can be shocks behind which the transverse pressure decreases. (AIP)
