This year sees the start of production from the Occidental Group's Piper field in the North Sea. Crude will flow by pipeline to a processing terminal on the island of Flotta in Orkney. From there stabilized crude will be exported to the group's various customers. This operation will make use of two specially-designed single-point mooring towers. There is ample water depth at Scapa Flow, the harbor to the north of Flotta and one of the largest natural harbors in Europe. The two SPMs are placed about two miles off the island's north shore. Each SPM is linked to the Flotta terminal by a 2-mile, 48-in. crude loading line and a 36-in. deballast line. Design loading rate for each is 80,000 bbl/h, while water ballast can be transferred to shore at a rate of 45,000 bbl/h. (MCW)
