Thermoelastic analysis of waste-container sleeve: I. Initial estimates of loading on the sleeve. Technical memorandum report (RSI-0010)

Waste-container sleeve loading estimates of approximately 3300 psi were obtained from an axially-symmetric, thermoelastic/plastic, finite-element analysis of the SALT-4/T model over a simulated 10-year heating. Local failures of salt adjacent to the sleeve and in the vicinity of the excavated room are not observed; the model remains elastic throughout the excavation and heating periods. A reduced strength analysis indicates that a salt safety factor of approximately two is present. Actual waste-container sleeve loading will be highly dependent upon details of heat transfer to the adjacent salt, which in turn is directly dependent upon the geometry and installation of the proposed sleeve and container. In addition, material properties of the container/sleeve arrangement and the salt must be known for an accurate assessment of container design adequacy. It is therefore recommended that the analysis be pursued in additional detail sufficient for the specification of an efficient container and installation design.
