Zirconia and yttria--thoria ceramics find new uses as solid electrolytes

Journal Article · · Mater. Eng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7321819
Zirconia and yttria-thoria are electrical insulators at low temperatures, but become electrical conductors at elevated temperatures. Their high-temperature conductivity can be controlled by varying the type and amount of stabilizer such as calcia, yttria, or magnesia. O ions will pass through the zirconia lattice: it is impervious to all other gases. This property is used in devices for determining O in gases, liquids, and metals. It also makes it useful in fuel cells.
