Where have all the metals gone

Book ·
OSTI ID:7321617
Analysis of the United States minerals production data shows that at least fifteen metals have already peaked in production. The mineral fuels crude oil and natural gas are very near their peaks. The fact that most metals have peaked in production is consistent with the fact that most metals are more than fifty percent imported. Chapter One discusses the minerals crisis. The next three chapters summarize data on various metals: highly depleted U.S. metals (gold, platinum group, mercury, manganese ore, chromite, silver, lead, cadmium, zinc, tin, beryl, niobium--tantalum); moderately depleted U.S. metals (tungsten ore, selenium, tellurium, iron ore, bauxite, rutile, ilmenite, vanadium, nickel); and depletion of U.S. mineral fuels (crude oil, natural gas, coal). An overview of the U.S. metals and minerals is given in Chapter Five. Chapter Six presents possible futures for the U.S. in energy, materials, and population. (MCW)
