Correlations between charged particles and. gamma. quanta in. pi. /sup -/p interactions at 40 GeV/c

Experimental data on the two-particle rapidity correlations R(y/sub 1//sub*/, y/sub 2//sub*/), C(y/sub 1//sub*/, y/sub 2//sub*/) for ..gamma..--ch and ..gamma..--..gamma.. systems from ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 40 GeV/c are presented and compared with the corresponding correlations for the ch--ch system. The functions R and C for the ..gamma pi../sup -/ and ..gamma pi../sup +/ systems are found for the first time. Analysis of the data shows that there are short-range positive correlations for the ..gamma..--ch and ..gamma..--..gamma.. systems and that the inequality R/sub ch--ch/>R/sub ..gamma..--ch/ is observed. Study of the azimuthal correlations made it possible to detect correlations for the ..gamma..--..gamma.. and ..pi../sup hyphen/..pi../sup hyphen/ systems that are associated with the identity of the particles. The results are compared with multiperipheral-model and phase-space calculations. The multiperipheral model gives a satisfactory description of the experimental data. (AIP)
