Effectiveness of various catalysts in hydrogenative degradation of high-temperature pitch in liquid phase (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7320693
This report described a series of experiments carried out to evaluate several possible replacements for the standard catalyst used in the process. The experiments were all carried out under uniform conditions, including starting material of 70 percent cokery pitch in 30 percent fuel oil, catalyst at 1 to 4 percent of amount of starting material, pressure of 700 atm, etc. All products of a given run were recombined and distilled into two fractions (cutoff point 325/sup 0/C) for analysis. The conclusion of the report is that the usual catalyst, I.G. No. 11002 (2 percent molybdenum trioxide in carbonization coke), is clearly superior to all others tried. An iron catalyst, I.G. No. 10927 (about 10 percent iron in carbonization coke), is the next best, with about 3 times as much iron catalyst giving the same result as the molybdenum catalyst. All other attempts to develop better catalysts than these failed.
