A survey of the application of solar power to home use covers financial aspects such as the higher initial cost of a solar system compared with home heating systems and a seven-city study in which projected solar heating costs were lower than the costs of electric heating and, in some cases, lower than gas-heating costs; tax incentives; problems of design and manufacture such as the need to design a system to fit an existing building and to close the gap between the availability of finished solar components and the demand for them; do-it-yourself systems; construction barriers in the housing construction industry and the laws, e.g., fire codes; the need to define rights to unobstructed exposure to the sun's rays; and future problems, such as the coordination of solar energy and conventional energy systems.
