Hydrides of La--Ni compounds

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)

Hydrides of various compounds in the La-Ni system have been prepared by gas absorption at temperatures from 25 to 200 degrees C and pressures from 50 to 100 atmospheres of H/sub 2/. The compositions of the resulting hydrides are La/sub 7/Ni/sub 3/H/sub 11/, LaNiH/sub 3.6/, LaNi/sub 2/H/sub 4.5/, LaNi/sub 3/H/sub 5/, La/sub 2/Ni/sub 7/H/sub 10/, and LaNi/sub 5/H/sub 6.5/. X-ray diffraction verified that LaNiH/sub 3.6/ and LaNi/sub 5/H/sub 6.5/ are ternary compounds, while LaNi/sub 2/H/sub 4.5/, LaNi/sub 3/H/sub 5/, and La/sub 2/Ni/sub 7/H/sub 10/ form in an amorphous state when hydrided at temperatures near 25 degrees C. La/sub 7/Ni/sub 3/ forms primarily LaH/sub 3/ during hydrogen absorption. There were no indications of superconductivity or magnetic order down to 1.8 K in any of these materials. 23 refs.
