System for reducing toxic compounds in exhaust gases from internal combustion engines

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7319876
A system for minimizing the concentration of nitrogen oxides in internal combustion engine exhaust gases while simultaneously reducing the concentration of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide is described that accomplishes the above in a relatively simple manner. The system incorporates an air denitrogenating unit that separates nitrogen molecules from atmospheric air. The nitrogen molecules are then introduced into an air induction passage of the engine to enrich the air-fuel mixture, resulting in a reduction of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust. The denitrogenated air containing a large proportion of oxygen is supplied into the exhaust manifold of the engine as secondary air for the oxidation of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust.
