All those factors bearing on the creation of a high-quality Runge--Kutta code for the solution of ordinary differential equations are studied. These include the selection of a formula based on many theoretical and experimental measures of quality; the various aspects of constructing efficient, reliable algorithms; and the design of convenient but flexible software. A code, RKF45, is presented as a concrete realization of the conclusions of the study. 29 tables.
