Liquefaction and desulfurization of coal using synthesis gas

A process is described for desulfurizing and liquefying coal by heating said coal at a temperature of 375/sup 0/ to 475/sup 0/C in the presence of a slurry liquid, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, steam, and a catalyst comprising a desulfurization catalyst and an alkali metal salt.
