Uranium antimonide (NaCl crystal structure) is a type I antiferromagnet (T/sub n/ = 241.2 +- 0.1/sup 0/K) with moments in ferromagnetic (001) layers stacked antiferromagnetically +- +-. The spin direction is (001). The critical neutron scattering has been measured from a single crystal as a function of temperature and reduced wave vector q. Below T/sub N/ the power law M/M/sub o/ = D(1-T/T/sub N/)/sup ..beta../ holds for 10/sup -3/ less than or equal to 1-T/T/sub N/ less than or equal to 10/sup -1/ with D = 1.35 +- 0.05 and ..beta.. = 0.32 +- 0.02, in agreement with theory for a three dimensional system. A detailed study of the scattering shows two unusual features. First, the transverse susceptibility (measured around the (001) point) is vanishingly small. Second, considerable anisotropy was detected in the longitudinal spin correlations, depending on whether directions parallel or perpendicular to the spin ordering direction, k/sub 11//sup c/ and k/sub 11//sup a/, respectively, are considered. Both correlation lengths vary as (T/T/sub N/-1)/sup ..nu../ where ..nu.. approximately 0.32 +- 0.01. For all T, k/sub 11//sup c/ approximately 6k/sub 11//sup a/ suggesting the presence of anisotropic exchange. This arises from quadrupole--quadrupole interactions within the GAMMA/sub 8/ ground state of this 5f/sup 3/ electron system.
