Verwey transition in magnetite

The characteristics of the Verwey transition in magnetite at 123/sup 0/K are reviewed. An ordering takes place among Fe/sup 2 +/ and Fe/sup 3 +/ ions on the octahedral sites of the inverse spinel structure, accompanied by a sudden change of electrical resistivity. Recent neutron scattering measurements at Brookhaven in collaboration with Chikazumi's group at the University of Tokyo are discussed.
