A procedure is outlined for choosing the most convenient optimum operation of thermoelectric elements used for cooling and heating, taking into account the cost of equipment and of the electric power consumed. Expressions are obtained for the most economical supply current which ensures minimum total cost per unit of heat or cold produced. A critical relationship is established for the specific cost of equipment and electric power below which thermoelectric heating is more economical than direct electrical heating.
