Evaluation of the epicenter and intensity of the Pacific Northwest earthquake of December 14, 1872

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7314414

Earthquake-effects data for the Pacific Northwest earthquake of December 14, 1872, are reviewed. The information given for each town or place is the maximum reported effect (or effects) and represents the basis for the intensity rating. Intensity ratings are shown by Roman numerals, and each location is listed under the intensity rating assigned to it. All intensities are based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale of 1931, an abridged version of which is attached. A map showing the probable scope of the generally felt area and the probable attenuation of seismic zoning is included. The generally felt area appeared to be on the order of approximately 250,000 square miles. Based on this felt area, the magnitude would be about 6/sup 1///sub 4/ (Gutenberg and Richter). From the information reviewed to date on this earthquake, the epicenter (field epicenter) is believed to be in the Chelan-Entiat area of central Washington. A maximum intensity of VIII has been assigned to the area encompassed by the area of lower Lake Chelan and the towns and vicinities of Chelan, Chelan Falls, Entiat, Wenatchee, and Winesap.
