Recursive time-varying band-pass filter. [For use in seismic data processing]

Time-varying, digital band-pass filters are extensively used in seismic data processing, since the dominant frequency of reflected signals usually becomes lower and their bandwidth narrower with the passage of time. In routine seismic data processing, time-varying, digital band-pass filtering is stepwise. A seismic trace is partitioned into a number of overlapping segments, and each segment is then filtered with a desired, time-invariant, digital band-pass filter. This type of filtering is carried out either in the time domain (with a convolution operation) or in the frequency domain (with the fast Fourier transform). The filtered segments are then tapered in the overlap zones and summed to produce the filtered trace. With this approach, the transitions between the segments may be apparent, due to the stepwise changes in the frequency characteristics of the corresponding time-invariant, digital band-pass filters. The design of time-varying, digital band-pass filters with continuous (i.e., at each sampling instant) variation of the cutoff frequencies is considered.
