ESR study of linear aliphatic oligoesters under. gamma. -irradiation. I. Paramagnetic species produced in the materials by irradiation at 77/sup 0/K
Paramagnetic species produced in a series of linear aliphatic oligoesters (--O--(CH/sub 2/)/sub m/--O--CO--(CH/sub 2/)/sub n/--CO--)/sub p/ by ..gamma..-irradiation at 77/sup 0/K was investigated by an electron spin resonance (ESR) method. A predominant doublet observed immediately after ..gamma..-irradiation, which has hyperfine splitting of 20 to 23 gauss, is attributed to a radical anion. Slight decay of this radical anion is observed by illuminating the sample with visible light at 77/sup 0/K. A small amount of the radical anion is converted to double triplet, which is assigned to --(ES)--CH--CH/sub 2/-- (where ES denotes the ester group), from the result of heat treatment. The conformational angles for the two ..beta..-protons in the (6,2) oligoester are determined to be theta/sub 1/ = theta/sub 2/ = 30/sup 0/.
