Cross sections for the production of hydrogen atoms in the 3s, 3d, 4s, and 5s states by H/sup -/ impact on He, Ar, Xe, and N/sub 2/ have been measured for H/sup -/ energy from 1 to 5 keV. These cross sections are found to be relatively energy independent and several times larger than corresponding cross sections for H impact. Measurements have been presented giving an upper bound to the polarization fraction for emission from the 3d state and the 4p-4d state mixture. The measured polarization fractions are always less than +0.30. Additionally, measurements of emission from the target gases have been made in the region of Balmer-..cap alpha.., Balmer-..beta.., and Balmer-..gamma... H/sup -/ impact on Xe produces significant emission in the region of Balmer-..beta.., but no other radiation is found to conflict with the hydrogen emission over a 7.5 nm bandpass.
