Experimental data are presented to show the yield of chemicals - ethylene, propylene, butadiene, and benzene, among others - available from pyrolysis of a hydrogenated coal liquid. The latter was derived by catalytic hydrogenation of the 250 to 380/sup 0/C fraction of a USBM 'Synthoil' product whereby the liquid hydrogen content was increased from 10.4 to 12.8 weight percent while about 85 percent of the polynuclear aromatic compounds originally present were converted to their alicyclic analogs. Pyrolysis experiments were conducted at commercial steam-cracking conditions, using a steam to hydrocarbon weight ratio of unity and an average residence time of 0.3 s in a tubular flow reactor with exit temperature and pressure, respectively, 870/sup 0/C and 2.0 bar. In addition to the hydrogenated coal liquid, two other feedstocks - a petroleum distillate, of similar boiling range and hydrogen content, and decahydronaphthalene, a model alicylic substrate - were pyrolyzed at similar conditions. Relative to the petroleum distillate, the hydrogenated coal liquid yielded somewhat less ethylene, about half the propylene, the same butadiene, and about twice the benzene. The yields of compounds with less than 8 carbon atoms obtained from the hydrogenated coal liquid bore a striking resemblance to the yields of these compounds obtained from decahydronaphthalene, implying similarity of the respective pyrolysis pathways.
