An in situ recovery experiment was conducted in the Northwest Asphalt Ridge deposit near Vernal, Utah. Reverse combustion was used for the recovery of tar sands hydrocarbons. The field experiment produced liquid organic, aqueous, and gaseous materials. This paper describes the detailed characterization of product oils from the experiment and compares the data to those obtained on bitumen extracted from core samples taken prior to the burn. The light oils produced during the reverse combustion were upgraded considerably compared to the original bitumen, and the heavy oils are very similar to the bitumen. (DLC)
