YFeO/sub 3/ is shown to work as a photoanode for photoelectrolysis of water. Conduction is n type as indicated by its use as an anode. The optical band gap is an indirect transition of 2.6 eV, somewhat larger than in Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/. However, the smaller electron affinity of YFeO/sub 3/ means that it requires less bias for photoelectrolysis than Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/.
