The critical current density (J/sub c/), the volt--ampere characteristic (VAC) and the pinning force F/sub p/ are investigated in Nb and V single crystals containing hydrogen. The temperature of hydride phase formation during cooling and the hydrogen concentration were determined by calorimetry. A significant increase in J/sub c/ as well as a change in the VAC shape were detected after abrupt cooling of the specimens from 295 to 4.2/sup 0/K. The results are discussed under the assumption of vortex pinning by hydride precipitates.
