Measurement of the [ital B][sup +] and [ital B][sup 0] meson lifetimes

Journal Article · · Physical Review Letters; (United States)

The lifetimes of the [ital B][sup +] and [ital B][sup 0] mesons have been measured using fully reconstructed decays. In a sample of [similar to]49 600[ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, 148[plus minus]16 [ital B][sup +] and 121[plus minus]16[ital B][sup 0] mesons have been reconstructed using the silicon vertex detector. Unbinned likelihood fits to the proper lifetime distributions of these [ital B] mesons give [tau][sup +]=1.61[plus minus]0.16 (stat)[plus minus]0.05 (syst) ps, [tau][sup 0]=1.57[plus minus]0.18 (stat) [plus minus]0.08 (syst) ps, and [tau][sup +]/[tau][sup 0]=1.02[plus minus]0.16 (stat) [plus minus]0.05 (syst).
