Helicity dependence of the [nu][sub [ital e]] energy spectrum from the decay of unpolarized muons

The energy distribution for left- and right-handed [nu][sub [ital e]] from the decay of unpolarized [mu][sup +] has been calculated on the basis of the most general four-fermion interaction. The left-handed [nu][sub [ital e]] can be detected by the reaction [sup 12]C([nu][sub [ital e]],[ital e][sup [minus]])[sup 12]N (g.s.). A measurement of the total rate with an error of [lt]5% will improve present limits on the scalar coupling [ital g][sub [ital L][ital L]][sup [ital S]]. The energy distribution for a left-handed [nu][sub [ital e]] depends on the parameter [omega][sub [ital L]] which corresponds to the Michel parameter [rho] of the electron energy spectrum from muon decay. The standard model predicts [omega][sub [ital L]]=0. The new parameter [omega][sub [ital L]] can be determined with a precision of [Delta][omega][sub [ital L]]=0.026 for 100 events corresponding to [vert bar][ital g][sub [ital R][ital L]][sup [ital S]]+2[ital g][sub [ital R][ital L]][sup [ital T]][vert bar][le]0.37, where [ital g][sub [ital R][ital L]][sup [ital S]] and [ital g][sub [ital R][ital L]][sup [ital T]] represent scalar and tensor interactions with a left-handed [nu][sub [ital e]] and right-handed [bar [nu]][sub [mu]].
