Epa alkali scrubbing test facility: advanced program. Progress report No. 2, Jun 75--Feb 76

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7308242
The report gives results of advanced testing (from June 1975 to February 1976) of 30,000 acfm (10 MW equivalent) lime/limestone wet scrubbers for SO/sub 2/ and particulate removal at TVA's Shawnee Power Station. No reliability problems were experienced in 1143 hours of lime testing with cycling gas rate to simulate variable load operation in the venturi/spray tower. Clean operation of the mist eliminator (M.E.) system (3-pass, open-vane chevron M.E. with intermittent top and bottom wash) was achieved using lime in the venturi/spray tower system, but plugging occurred with a similar M.E. system using limestone in the Turbulent Contact Absorber. In tests to improve limestone utilization, M.E. reliability was found to be a strong function of alkali utilization. Limestone utilization was correlated with scrubber inlet pH, hold tank residence time, and hold tank design.
