If one imposes chiral invariance at short distances on gauge theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Higgs type one obtains a natural mechanism for the appearance of two classes of fermion masses: light ones and heavy ones. The light fermion masses turn out to be of the order g/sup 2/ times the masses of the heavy ones, g being the gauge coupling constant. The possibility of imposing chiral invariance is based on a nontrivial property of the renormalization of the Yukawa coupling constants in gauge theories. As an illustration a simple SU (3) lepton model is considered in which the ratio of the electron and muon masses can be calculated to be of order 1/137.
