This paper reports measurements of the magnetostriction in both single-crystal SmCo/sub 5/ and in the liquid-phase sintered (LPS) SmCo/sub 5/ permanent magnet material at fields up to ..mu../sub o/H=21 T. By using a strain-gauge technique the changes in length in different crystallographic directions were measured as a function of the field applied perpendicular to the c axis. Extrapolation of one of the measurements shows that there would be a contraction perpendicular to the c axis of almost 10/sup -3/ cm/cm at saturation along the same direction. The magnetostriction had the expected field dependence in SmCo/sub 5/ except for the measurement containing a contribution from shear. In demagnetized LPS material, the field dependence of the magnetostriction was altered in some cases from that in the single crystal. In one case, the field dependence changed dramatically following magnetization of the LPS material parallel to the c axis.
