Independent of GRI, AET and Anadarko Gathering Company ('Anadarko') formed a joint venture to demonstrate the Mehra Process technology for nitrogen rejection. The joint venture funded the construction of a 5 MMscfd NRU at Anadarko's Hugoton, Kansas compressor station. GRI contracted AET to report performance of a field test of the Mehra Process NRU. Data collected from the Hugoton Demonstration Unit confirms its capability to achieve 98.0% gross methane recovery with 2.0 mol% nitrogen in the sales gas. The measured energy usage at 3.5 MMscfd inlet gas flow was 9.1 MMBtu/hr of fuel required for the dehydration, refrigeration, and recompression systems. The electrical requirements were 210 kW. A new unit incorporating design improvements based on actual plant data and correcting for known inefficiencies would be expected to have energy usage of 5.4 MMBtu/hr and 146 kW, respectively.
