A sulfur recovery process developed by the French Petroleum Institute (Institut Francais du Petrole) is discussed. The IFP system consists of two separate sections: a scrubbing section, which captures SO/sub 2/ in an aqueous ammonia liquor; and the reactor section where sulfur values in the ammoniacal brine are converted to the molten elemental state, and the ammonia is recycled to the scrubbing system. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide do not interfere. Data provided from a demonstration system installed at a power plant at Champagne-sur-Aise include capital investment, operating requirements, and specifications of raw flue gas and cleaned gas.
