Mechanism of the processes of formation of lead--acid battery positive plates

Journal Article · · J. Electrochem. Soc.; (United States)

In the first step water and sulfuric acid penetrate into the plate; tet-PbO and basic lead sulfates are converted to PbSO/sub 4/ and ..cap alpha..-PbO/sub 2/, which form regions that advance into the paste. In the second step water is consumed in the plate. Lead sulfate is oxidized to ..beta..-PbO/sub 2/, and the acid diffuses in the direction opposite to that of the first step. The rate-limiting steps of the processes are ion diffusion and migration. (RWR)
