Exploratory studies of flame and explosion quenching. Annual technical progress report No. 1, 30 June 1972--30 June 1973

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7303509
These studies were aimed at the development of improved agents to suppress coal dust-air explosions. The approach employed was to sample both gaseous species and particles from uninhibited and inhibited flames, to obtain basic information about the mechanism of coal dust burning itself and the mode of action of dry-powder fire extinguishing agents. Attempts to stabilize flat, laminar, premixed coal dust-air flames, without any augmentation, are described, culminating in the successful stabilization of flat flames on both 6.3 cm and 12.6 diameter, Meeker-type burners. Dry powder extinguishing agent behavior is being studied by directly sampling particles from various regions of a premixed, CH4-air conical flame. (GRA)
