We extend the phase-transition study of the U(1) gauge theory from 4 to 4{minus}{var epsilon} dimensions using generalized Sierpinski carpets embedded in hypercubic lattices. Further evidence for the first-order nature in four dimensions is established. The spectral density and the cumulant method combined with the Ferrenberg-Swendsen multihistogram technique are applied to expose the vanishing of the first-order transition on fractal manifolds with less than 4 dimensions.
