Oil recovery process using micellar dispersions containing a metal phosphate

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7301273

To improve oil recoveries in reservoirs containing a relatively high hardness, about 1 percent by weight metal phosphate was added to the oil-external micellar dispersion. Berea cores (20.4 percent porosity, 572 md) were saturated with crude and flooded with brine (100,000 ppm TDS, 10,000 ppm equivalent to calcium carbonate hardness) before treatment with the micellar dispersion followed by Pusher 530 in freshwater. The dispersion contained petroleum sulfonate, crude oil, primary amyl alcohol, brine (5,000 ppm sodium chloride), and sodium hexametaphosphate (79.7 percent OIP was recovered). This was about 18 percent more than was obtained without the metal phosphate.
